Excellent personal serviceWe went to the Alps specifically to stay in a traditional ryokan and whilst this building is a 'modern' one, the feeling is certainly traditional. We were greeted by the staff member with English language skills and she explained how everything works before taking us to our room, pointing out our Yukatas, explaining the onsen 'rules' and serving us green tea. By far the biggest positive in this ryokan is the private dining experience that greets you each evening. It can only be described as a banquet, lovingly prepared and served; course after course after course. We dined in private in a traditional paper room with fire and cooking pot. The bedroom was transformed when we returned; futons laid out and more green tea supplies on hand. Breakfast was more of a trial for our Western palates - it seems like a scaled down version of our (fish-laden) dinner. The Ryokan is becoming a little dated and the bathing facilities had the same feel but, hey, it was the Alps and we deliberately didn't want a sanitised hotel version on this leg of the trip. I would happily stay here again.

Large ryokan in a ghost town, food very goodAs said above, there is nothing to do in the area except visit an insensitive near the river or go up the rope way (very expensive and decent view, but done in an hour). It is quiet and slightly gloomy in the summertime, we were the only visitors in the ryokan and our hosts sis everything they could to make us feel welcome. It is a large place, so it felt quite lonely in there. The food was wonderful however, a huge amount of dishes were served, they really outdid themselves. They were among the best meals we had during our stay in Japan.

Wonderful stayWe stayed 3 nights in this ryokan and experienced the best hospitality we have had in Japan. The family who run this establishment went beyond expectation in accommodating our needs (and there were a few. We are in our sixties and not used to futon sleeping :) The food, i believe, was traditional and very fresh and very good, especially great for me as my wife doesn't eat seafood :) If you are looking for a western bed and food then this won't be for you but you wont go past the kindness and consideration shown here. The location is good if you just want to get away from it all but there is nothing much happening in this sleepy little town. We drove there so we did some sightseeing and we're australians so used to travelling a bit to reach a destination. Takayama city is a 40 minute drive from this hotel.

Excellent Ryokan experienceThe ryokan is v clean and the private onsen is wonderful. They have 4 private onsen rooms which are free for guests and available almost all day long. There is a sliding lock on the door so you just use any of the 4 that is unoccupied. No need to reserve. We got rooms w/ Western beds so a good way to experience a ryokan without sleeping on a futon ( a bit hard for my old body I think.) The rooms are on the small size especailly the toilet, but that's authentic and usual. Our family really enjoyed this ryokan experience.

Close to lot of interesting sitesThis place is a great for Onsens and also to visit Japanese Alpes a lot of nearby touristic sights and great hiking spots. Concerning the hotel itself the hot baths are really good and also the dinner menu diversified and a good taste of local food. But concerning the complements in the room only 2 used bath towels if you need extra one need to pay 100 yuan! For the price of the place is a bit too much.
