  First time in Gambia....Calabash is the place to be

  First time in Gambia and just came back from a 2 week stay in the Calabash residence and it really is an amazing place to stay. My room had a double bed and was very spacious and clean also had aircon with a fan. The location is brilliant as the beach is a 2 min walk and Senagambia is just a short taxi ride away. Staff which are so friendly always smiling and went above and beyond my needs. I met the owners of the hotel Elizabeth and Aziz who are on sight most days who are so friendly always smiling and always had time to talk to me. Also Alergy (not sure if I spelt his name right) and Fatou who were always very helpful and smiling and again went above and beyond. The restaurant had a large selection of food which is cheap and very tasty. If you want somewhere which is friendly great location with good food Calabash is the place to be. Would highly recommend and will be staying there again.

  Terrible and dangerous

  The positives . The apartment is spacious with nice comfortable bed, furniture and well equipped kitchen . The gardens are nice and the staff are great. One day the bathroom door locked and we could not get in. A man came and managed to get it open. Next day same thing happened again . We complained and owner became aggresive and told us if we did not like it to check out ! I ( I had already paid and was not offered a refund otherwise I would) The door was fixed by breaking the lock; it remained without a lock for the rest of our holiday. The swimming pool was murky and for last 5 days it was unusable . Seemingly it needed new filter. One night I lost the key to apartment. There was no spare key on premises ! I was told owner has a key but he lives a long way away . No one seemed to know what to do . Fortunately with help of security guard we found it. Toilet in shower room leaked it was fixed after 1 day . . Shower in wet room was broken for 4 days , my wife is disabled and cant manage shower over bath. We had paid for breakfast and on first day we were served tea. We had finished the tea before breakfast arrived so I asked for a top up. I was told I had to pay extra if I wanted another cup ! I complained and owner came over telling waitress to put it on his bill ! Then to cap it all a huge ceiling fan came crashing to the floor. Luckily no one was injured . There is a lack of basic maintenance of the apartments and and this penny pinching is starting to show.

  The Best Introduction to Gambia Ever!

  My first trip to Africa and I was highly apprehensive of the unknown. After reading tons of reviews online I decided to go with Calabash; what a great decision that was. Elizabeth and staff were amazing from the get go, upgrading my room to a pool view and providing me with tons of information on Gambia. Clean apartment rooms, large with all the amenities and delicious serving of food. Trust me this is located in a perfect tourist location. With the main Gambia strip only a 10 min walk away. Gambia is really the smiling coast; everyone is so friendly making you feel very welcome. Another bonus is that the beautiful Kotu beach is right next door. I spent a lot of mornings visiting the Beach and eating fresh fruit from the Fruity ladies. Id like to thank Calabash, Elizabeth and staff for looking after me and hope to return soon. Highly recommend these Apartments! - Abdulla

  Terrible, must be another Calabash!!

  Booked 3 weeks in Feb.2020 B&B. On arrival was told the Appt. we had booked, someone else was in it. said they would move if we wanted it. We found the floor from shower room to bedroom was extremely slippy, like liquid soap on it. When we reported it they came in and put carpets over it, instead of cleaning it. Some of the lamps not working, every day there was continual power cuts, so they gave us candles. When we asked about the generator, they said it was too warm for it to work, next time said it was broken. Every other hotel was lit up! Only a trickle of water from bathroom tap! Food was terrible, all day breakfast!! Went down for breakfast next morning, no cereals, breakfast very limited.Complained to manageress, she said, could we put a breakfast menu together for her of things we would like. At breakfast one morning, two other couples came down, so the waitress asked if she could have our teapot to give to the other couple!! Came back from the beach one day in the afternoon, no electric again, said I would have a shower while it was still light. Opened the shower room door and was met with a wall of water, which flooded into the bedroom and kitchen. That is when we decided enough was enough. Told Aziz we were moving to another hotel after 5 days of this, he agreed to refund the rest of our money, eventually! The room next door to us said he got electric shocks from the shower, when he turned it on and off. We have been going to Gambia for 17 years and never stayed anywhere as bad as this. The whole place needs renovating and staff training properly I don't know where all these glowing reports come, we must have been in a different Calabash!!

  Excellent value

  Stayed here over Christmas and New Year with my wife and 2 teenage kids. Had a very spacious 2 bedroom apartment which included a small kitchen, great to make some breakfast or quick snacks. The staff are very friendly and keen to help you, we especially liked Margaret who was our cleaner !! The pool is good although we spent most of the time at the beach which is 5 minutes walk away and there are numerous places to eat and drink close by. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because we had a few issues with the wifi not working and the electricity kept tripping out in our room too. However, this didn't spoil our stay here. If I go back to Gambia then I would certainly stay again.
