  Really bad accomodation

  Our 'standard room' that cost 177/night had a tiny bed (max 140 cm wide) with 40cm on both sides between bed and the wall. There was 1 small closet (see picture) to store your clothes so you have to keep them in your bags during your stay. Closing the curtains is a challenge because of the wooden bar and worn-out rings, persons under 1m90 will have to take a chair to do the job. There is no thermostatic shower faucet and it is impossible to select and and maintain an acceptable water temperature, you can choose between very cold or really burning hot. The towel rack is loose and will break apart on the floor if you touch it, which is really a problem because you'll need a steady rack to hold on to when you get 2 steps down out of the shower on the very slippery floor. I filmed my attempts to close the curtain and the disintegrating towel rack, but I cannot upload videos on this forum. The airconditioning works perfectly but there is a price to pay, every hour or so there is a 30 second grinding noise - much like a Nespresso machine. It is a bit of a nuisance when you are trying to sleep. That will probably not work anyway because due to the worn-out wooden floor, your bed actually moves when somebody passes in the hallway. The room (nr 6) is tiny, worn-out and badly maintained. When we complained about the room we were told that no other rooms were available but one of the 350 /night apartment. I would advise the people that run the hotel to spend a few nights in the rooms they offer. The situation shows a lack of respect for the customer. For the rest ... the building itself is really beautiful and the food in the restaurant is good. Breakfast is almost OK, the offering is minimum and lacks a bit of imagination. Why not add some local goods for instance? The staff - most of them really friendly and professional. Unfortunately, there is no cosy atmosphere in the hotel at all, probably the COVID-19 measures should be partly blamed for that.

  Stunning hotel with beautiful rooms and good food - a little remote

  This hotel is very stunning and the room we had was outstanding in both decor, quality and style. The restaurant was good but you can also get bar meals which we were unaware of until after our meal and would have preferred a simpler meal that night rather than a four course meal. Staff are friendly and pool and outside area are great.

  A really nice stopover

  We spent a night at the start of our holiday and it was great , we had a really nice room and dinner In the restaurant was excellent. Very friendly staff . Well worth the detour from the autoroute and a snapshot of rural France

  Expensive and shabby

  Such a beautiful building on the outside and so disappointing on the inside. We checked in and then out, in the space of 10 minutes. The 'suite' we were offered was very expensive and shabby and in need of total renovation.

  Peaceful setting - beautiful grounds - first time visit has left us wanting to come back very soon

  We stayed at Barive on the last night of a 14-day motorcycle trip, so you can imagine how we looked when we walked up to the reception. We were delighted at the welcome, no raised eyebrow concerning our dusty appearance. The grounds are just gorgeous and so well kept, the decor of the room (N. 21) and the main house are a mixture of modern and antique - but it all fits well and blends in together. As we were tired, we didn't go to the restaurant but took advantage of the "sur le pouce" offer of a smaller menu, which we were able to enjoy on the terrace with a view of the inner courtyard and the beautiful alley leading up to the Domaine. We even found time for a quick dip in the pool. I am positive we will come back to Barive and the next time, we'll plan for more time so we can thoroughly enjoy the Spa and the surroundings.
