  Relaxed and efficient.

  This is one of several hotels which serve Istanbul Ataturk airport, though this will soon change with the opening of the new Istanbul airport. Not to be confused with the Wyndham Grande, which is where the taxi driver assumed I was heading. About a 10 minute drive from the airport. There is supposed o be a hotel shuttle, but this was nowhere to be seen on arrival. Quick check-in and out, Good English spoken, modern, spacious and comfortable with good amenities - indoor pool, fitness centre etc. Good room service, well-stocked mini-bar and properly indexed TV channels. Attention is paid to detail - there was an exercise bicycle in my room, while staff were friendly and very helpful. Within reasonable distance from the city centre, though there are no shops in the immediate vicinity. Obviously popular wth tourist groups, but also good value and highly recommended for short-stay business visits.

  Sadly, not a great stay

  I booked this hotel based on the Hawthorne Wyndham website and customer reviews, and I was underwhelmed by my stay at the hotel which I visited last month. My issues were not wholly about the hotel physically, but crucially, how it's run. Check-In was late (our arrival time was given to the hotel prior to our visit), and my party was the only one checking in at 1 AM. This took way too long and I was told to sit down as they dealt with another customer despite my party being there first. A minor issue is that this hotel is shared with another chain (TYUP) under the same management, which confused me. It was however explained to me but still, this baffled me as the website does not mention this. I booked this hotel based on free shuttle transfers to landmarks and airports but was told this service is only for customers paying through THEIR website. Ive been to many other hotels, and amenities for guests are amenities to ALL guests regardless of what channel a customer has paid through (I paid through a 3rd party). Front desk staff are polite but arent sympathetic, and as someone that has worked in customer service for years, this is terrible. Expressing to me that, Ive mentioned this issue with the sales team and a lot of customers had the same issues arent helpful, its mocking customers. It doesn't take much to add temporary notifications to websites especially if they know there's an issue. I sense there is a lack of communication between CS and web team. Prior to booking I called the hotel and received no answer, and prior to that, I emailed Hawthorne Wyndham only to be told (fobbed off) to call the hotel myself. So catch 22. I was aware of the distance between the old city and the hotel but thought due to the 'free trips to attractions' my party and I would be fine. Since that fell through, I had to rethink the travels we had to do daily. If you do not have a car, consider a closer hotel to the city, unless you want to be close to the airport or you are there for business. For our first day, we decided to check out the local area, which is quite dangerous in terms of pedestrian safety. I have absolutely no problem with the hilliness of the area (which could be a problem if you dont like a challenging walk), but the pavements have huge potholes the size of hula hoops and metal debris sticking out of the paving. These were encountered while trying to find the local station. After that day we decided to use UBER every day to avoid any accidents. The hotel isnt relatively close to the local station and the area is developing, Im sure it will look lovely when done but it is nowhere near finished. Please bear that in mind if you are wishing to do any walking or cycling in the area. Also, local private taxi drivers know whos foreign and who isnt and bug you incessantly so they can get work if youre exploring the area. Saying this, Istanbul is safe so I wasnt worried, but I didnt appreciate being bothered more than once. Aside from the station a 15-minute walk away, there isnt anything in-between, further away from the hotel there are some restaurants and a decent supermarket. The other direction of the hotel, away from the station and towards the airport, there is an interesting outlet mall (which I liked better than the Mall of Istanbul). Another thing to bear in mind is the language barrier in the local area (this is not an area for tourists), although there is no issue with this in the hotel, it will be a challenge to find someone that will or is willing to understand you. Trust me Google Translate is your friend at times like these. Aside from the lukewarm CS of the hotel, breakfast was pleasant, but we saw what seemed to be a small cockroach near the toaster towards the end of our stay. Although the hotel is 'good-looking' it needs a good clean, the areas for eating needs a vacuum desperately. There were crumbs embedded in the same places near the large windows on a daily basis. We didn't need our suite cleaned daily, but when we agreed to a clean there were days where the clean was really good, to really bad and pointless. The suite was nice at a first glance, but towards the end of our stay, we noticed the issues of the suite. The shower flooded, no washing liquid for mugs/glasses and would it have been helpful to have some cutlery and plates. We didnt use the indoor swimming pool/gym, but it looked well kept. There is also a spa which is an extra that we also didnt use and a sauna/steam room available for female/male (mixed) use. Also, the amenities on the website needs to be changed/updated (this seems to be a very neglected part of management, which could really affect a business like this in the digital age). Unfortunately, I will never use this hotel or its chain again. To me, CS is the root of a great business and because it's such a severe let down in this instance more problems surfaced. If a business has poor CS everything topples like dominos. As non-local/non-driver this area is not recommended. I wouldnt say its for families, but its probably targeting business customers and larger parties of people. The good points were the cute kittens and their mother outside the breakfast room area that entertained us daily and the beautiful call to prayer from the local mosques but these are more to do with the local area, not hotel amenities :)

  Cheating on their services

  My parents were suppose to stay here between their 2 flights as they were offered a 12 hours lay over by Turkish airlines,However about 3 hours after they check in,they received a phone call by this hotel reception stating that Turkish airlines amended the next flight departure time and as a result they required all the passenger to be transported to the airport earlier... When my parents arrived at the airport there was nothing as such by Turkish airline and flight ended up departing at original scheduled departure time. I believe the hotel took advantage of the fact that my parents English were not good and ,in addition they lied by saying that's how Turkish airline instructed them to do which is totally incorrect. Last but not least not impressed at all by their services... This story happened on the 12th Feb/2019

  Stay away

  Terrible service, unfriendly. dogs barking all night. If I could rate less than 1 I would. Dont stay. Newer, but it if you dont sleep, it is hard to enjoy. Location is pretty nice to airport. If you are a stranded travel for a day, stay at the airport lounge or hotel. Look for an older hotel with higher ratings. You will be disappointed here.

  Comfortable stay

  Really comfortable bed and nice room, no complains in terms of the room. Has all the basic necessity and a pretty decent bar downstairs (22 lira for a pint of local draught - Efis Pilsen). This is more like a business hotel, and relatively far from city center (1 hr or more drive in jam). There is a fitness center with a small indoor pool. Think the price is a bit steep for RM500 plus. Would have given 4 star if not for the price and location. But cleanliness and comfort is pretty good.
