Loved it and plan to return - very peaceful

We needed a quiet week to recharge the batteries and Atrio was definitely the right choice. Wonderful scenery, very peaceful, comfortable room, good food. And the staff - fantastic! Very friendly and helpful. The massage is good, too. It only took a few days for conversation to turn to 'when shall we come back?'! Plus, there's a cat :-)

    An oasis of peace

We stay for two weeks in February/early March in room 19. This is a rural and quiet hotel with predominantly separate accommodation in units down the hillside. Room 19 was in the last so up and down to the main building/entrance was initially a challenge but would be for someone with walking difficulties so beware. Breakfast is a buffet with hot options. Dinner is either set or from a limited a la carte. We ate in for dinner 4 times during our stay each time with a good meal - rustic home cooking but if you don't get to the dining room early you end up on less favorable tables. Didn't unduly worry us. Same with breakfast - not everyone can have a table in the sun on the patio. Used the laundry service - excellent and good value as was the massage. We knew the hotel would have predominantly German guests but that didn't worry us but for those who want to socialise as an integral part of a holiday in the bar it may be more of a challenge. We found the hotel well positioned so we could get to everything we wan ed to do. Yes there was easy driving to Fungal (about 35 ins) but parking was easy and the roads work and flow well. A car is essential to enjoy the island. Would we return. If we do come back to the island - yes!

    Relaxing stay in peaceful surroundings

This hotel is in a lovely position - in a quiet area and with views of the coast. The room we stayed in was in the main building on the first floor overlooking the courtyard. The bed was very comfortable, there was an inside seating area with a sofa, and tea/coffee facilities, as well as a balcony. There was an option to eat breakfast either in the dining room or outside on the terrace. Being March, the evening meal was served inside. The staff were very friendly and the service was excellent. The food was also excellent with ample choice, including 'cooked to order' hot food at breakfast and generous portions for the evening meal. There were maps and walking books in Reception together with walking poles for guests to borrow. Overall, this was a very relaxing stay in peaceful surroundings.

    Rustic, welcoming, relaxing

We stayed at Hotel Atrio from the 15th to the 24th of August 2020. The hotel is a little difficult to find, nestled in the hills above Calheta (the village is called Estreito da Calheta); after a couple of wrong turns we found it to be very conveniently located near to Calheta and the main road from Funchal, but far enough away to be very peaceful. We were made to feel very welcome on arrival and throughout our stay. Staff were very friendly and accommodating to our needs. Madeira legislation at the time of our stay required us to take a Covid 19 test; we were tested on arrival at Funchal airport and remained in our hotel room until the negative results were supplied late evening (tests took up to 12 hours to be processed). Food and drink were supplied to our room throughout the late afternoon and early evening; we had full access to the whole hotel from the morning of the 16th. Service was always prompt, polite, helpful and interest always shown in what we had done during each of our days travels with suggestions on further similar places provided to visit. The atmosphere is very laid back; staff respect and cater to guests needs; guests respect staff and each other. There are very few rules; in fact, the only rules were to maintain hygiene to protect against Covid 19. We did not find annoying signs everywhere explaining the obvious hot water is hot etc.; enjoyment relies on common sense. We possibly benefitted from the downturn of tourists in that the hotel was only 50% occupied at the time of our visit, although we respect the fact that the island suffered as a whole from fewer tourists this summer; a choice of tables were therefore always available at breakfast and evening meal, and we never had a problem getting poolside loungers on the few occasions we used the pool. Breakfast is severed between 08:00 and 11:00 and is plentiful with various cold meats, cheeses, homemade pastries, yoghurts, fruits, freshly squeezed orange juice and copious amounts of coffee. We also ate omelettes some mornings cooked to order. We stayed in duplex room 4 (mini-suite) that was well equipped with towels including those for beach/ poolside, hair dryer, tea/ coffee making facilities, soap, shampoo, shower gel, satellite TV. Rooms are a little basic but very comfortable. We have fond memories admiring the lovely distant sea views from the balcony whilst sipping a glass of local wine in the company of the hotels tabby cat Cyrano. Food is available from midday with evening meals severed from 18:00 to 21:00. We ate each evening at the hotel poolside. We particularly enjoyed the fish dishes served with produce grown in the hotels extensive hill side grounds, local wine and homemade desserts. In conclusion, a rustic, welcoming atmosphere in which we enjoyed some lovely food and drink and much needed relaxation; thank you to all at Hotel Atrio.

    Amazing

Coped really well with the COVID measurements, and we were allowed to go anywhere after getting a negative test. The setting is simply stunning, the pool is great, and the surroundings are beautiful! As we would eat outside, there would be paths going right down to the valleys and beaches. Not loud at all, peaceful and friendly. The hotel cat was especially welcoming. :)
