  Amazing Place to Be

  Very spacious room. Wonderful staff . Quite relaxing. Travelled for Business. The staff were welcoming and hospitable. The breakfast was something to look forward to on my next trip!! Thank you! Good value for money

  Service

  Good service and affordable rates...the receptionist are very kind and quick to assist. Transportation is available and the bar is well stocked with both local and international drinks available at very pocket friendly prices.

  Dirty and badly managed

  I stayed in this hotel for one night for the required quarantine and as I checked into the room, I was afraid of removing my shoes due to the state of the carpet, then realised that the carpet was full of nails from previous guests (not small cuts but massive and visible). When I notified reception, a cleaner was sent with a dustpan and a bloom which I politely sent him back and requested a vacuum cleaner. He came back with a big old broken vacuum cleaner that didn't clean to say that is all they have. As the vacuum cleaner fumed out so much dust, I tied to open curtains to let the dust out and was shocked by the state of curtains and window covered with even thicker layers of dust. Tried to sit outside and there was bird poo everywhere due to bird nest above me. Balcony chairs were very dirty with no table. I was too tired to change another room with probably similar state so I wiped the chair and sat outside until I had to come in for dinner (dry and over cooked chicken with rice and no sauce but a compliment of one chip and I mean 1*french flies). I am not even going to mention the unmatching tea cup and saucer or TV position. For breakfast I ordered just fruits as I could not imagine cooked breakfast being better than dinner and received 6 pieces of baby size cut fruits. I will never recommend anyone to stay there under current management, however with the right team it will be a great hotel due to perfect location and amazing views of the entire Kigali.

  Had a exellent stay here. Mangement is always on hand if needed. Great concierge. Room services always available. Thank you for a memorable stay. Also to the shuttle service a big thank you for looking after the safety of Portofino guests.

  Wedding plans ruined

  This is an unusual review not about service in the hotel but rather about the attitude of the Villa Portofino in failing to provide a contracted service. This review concerns a wedding reception which was booked around 9 October for the reception to be held in a specific room inside the hotel on 30 October. A deposit of RWF 500,000 (about $500) was paid, and the booking confirmed. On Wednesday 28 October at 9pm we received a call from the Villa Portofino cancelling our booking due to a double-booking for the room the reception was due to be held in. Readers can imagine the stress and hurt caused by this call. To cancel a reception one business day before the wedding is unheard of and is totally thoughtless. The day before a wedding, brides have last minute preparations to complete. Finding a new venue for the reception is not normally part of these preparations, especially when they are not at fault. We appealed to the Villa Portofino and asked them to rescind the cancellation to no avail. The best offer was to hold the reception around the pool and then move to the reception room when it was available. Those familiar with Rwandas rainy season will realise that anything booked outside is liable to severe disruption from thunderstorms especially in the afternoon. If we wanted an external event, we would have booked that in the first instance. So, at 1.30pm on the day before the wedding, after wasting three hours meeting with various Villa Portofino staff, we had a cheque with the deposit returned plus meagre compensation of RWF 200,000 (about $200), but nowhere to hold the wedding reception. The attitude of Villa Portofino staff was unbending in the extreme; there was absolutely no way we were ever going to be given the room we had booked, despite their admission that they were at fault. Their stance throughout the discussions was morally wrong. I have no idea why the other booking was allowed to take precedence, but this should be a warning to anyone thinking of using the Villa Portofino services. Will they deliver in the end, or will you also be left as we were, scrabbling around at the last minute to make good their failings?
