A rather basic hotel, but rooms were clean and quite large. Hotel is a longish walk to the centre of town, but a short tuk tuk ride. Some nice places to eat and a fantastic little bohemian bar - Nam Sai art and décor - down by the river. Hotel staff were fine and breakfast area pleasant under the trees.

Comfortable and clean but VERY isolated

We enjoyed our 2 nights here, but that was because we have our own transport and this place is a long way from Khong Jiam itself. Also a decent long drive to Pha Taem cliffs and Soi Sawan Waterfall. We were the only people staying here. It is very clean and comfortable and quiet because it is so isolated. On our 2nd night there was a power outage and we lost power for 2 hours or so ..... quite common in isolated areas in Thailand! The one main problem is that nothing really has a good view of the river despite being right on the riverside. The Suites are built sideways (instead of facing the river) and the second one has the river view obscured by the other suite. The only building that faces the River is a small elevated cottage that is used as a "hong pra" (i.e. a temple / monks room). In contrast, we spotted a couple of other establishments along this road that have built their accommodation to face the River and maximise the view of the Mighty Mekong River.

    River view near national park

The location is a bit out of the way, but its quiet and on the river bank. Near pha thaem National Park . Laos on across the Mekong river very rural. Dinner is good but breakfast basic. Service / staff excellent.

Beautiful location by the Mekong River

This riverside boutique hotel is just north of the confluence of the Mun and Mekong Rivers, but away from the rather busy tourist centre. It is an attractive looking collection of buildings in pretty grounds, and is a splendid place to watch the sun setting over the river. A steepish sandy track leads from the hotel down to the river's edge. It is advertised as a "better living resort" but the bare polished concrete surfaces in the new chalets and room block have a definite unfinished look about them. The dining room has several terraces overlooking Laos and the Mekong River and dinner and an extensive buffet breakfast were good. There is no pool. The hotel is well located for a visit to the Pha Taem National Park with its exceptional c 3000 year old wall paintings - well worth a visit for the scenic walk as well.

Great place for the birds and wall paintings

The White Meranti / Kayom House Resort. This place can be can be summarised in two ways...very basic...and beautiful location. Before I carry on I must clarify where this is. It is in eastern-most Thailand across the River Mekhong from Laos. It isn't a hotel in Bangkok or Phuket and is very isolated, only really accessible by car. So, although some of my review may come across as negative, it didn't really worry me, except perhaps the shower...read on. There was a biggish car park, and lots of rooms. However, there were also plenty of steps and no one to help with the bags. I stayed there because there are two species of Thai birds that occur here on the Mekong and are easy to see. I saw them from the room, so it was perfect. I was the only guest and all other rooms were empty. I'd booked a standard room and although it was adequate, it was very small with little room to store your case and holdall. I asked if I could have a larger room but was refused unless I paid extra, even though all the others were empty. In the event, the door on my room wouldn't lock, so they gave me the room I'd asked for when I arrived. The only problem was that the shower didn't work. There was a leak on it and the water that ran out was cold and smelt bad. So it was unusable. Apart from that, the room was okay, quiet, clean enough, a big bed but hard, and low, soft pillows and plenty of windows. There wasn't a room safe, no tea maker, no slippers or dressing gown and the aircon was quiet. The TV only had Thai-speaking channels on it. I tried the food at night, simply because there was no where else. It was awful and expensive. There were two wooden tables in the 'restaurant' .Cold, almost raw vegetables and Mekong river fish, which were tiny dried, inedible fish. I asked for hot food and ended up with warm vegetables and rice, no meat or fish. There were only big bottles of beer, no small ones. The breakfast wasn't much better. Hot eggs and plastic sausages with cold ham. No English tea, just weak Thai tea or 3 in 1 coffee. I guessed that because I was the only guest, there was no cook and the maids were doing the cooking. The girls were young and from Laos, didn't speak English and although they tried their best, were out of their depth. I saw the owner briefly when I arrived but she didn't speak at all until the next morning when I was leaving. I just got the feeling that the resort was set up for Thai tourists, not westerners. There was no phone reception at all and the Wi-Fi only worked in reception. It probably sounds worse than it actually was. Apart form the lack of a shower which was a problem, the location is fabulous. The views over the Mekong and the sunsets are amazing and worth seeing. You do need your own transport, but you'd probably have it anyway. I'd stay again but would need the shower fixed if staying longer than a night....
