    MALO

Nightmare in Paradise - You Cannot Afford to Book This As A Cheap Option

Close your eyes and picture the perfect Barbados trip (sandy beaches, turquoise water, delicious food, friendly locals, world-class hospitality) and then picture the exact opposite, concentrated in one apartment-hotel complex - this is Ocean Spray. This booking was made because Ocean Spray was an approved quarantine hotel, which implies that the government who approved it can vouch for their cleanliness/health and safety. Upon arrival, the loose guidelines and federal oversight was on full display as a nightmare began to take shape that would literally haunt our dreams for ten nights. It is worth noting here that much of Barbados relies on WhatsApp (ordering food, taxis, even communicating with the front desk manager at this hotel). For our 10-day stay, we had zero WiFi in our room the entire time which meant we could not communicate to the front desk (there are no phones in the room other than your mobile), the government (for Covid results etc) unless we dangled off the balcony trying to get wifi for a few seconds. This was not an issue with one room as we were put into multiple rooms and we took photos of dozens of other quarantine guests dangling off their balconies, desperate to order a survival food delivery or talk to loved ones. More on this to follow. Speaking of balconies, I was grateful to receive beer caps and cigarette butts from the last prisoner/guest to remind me of the diligence the cleaning staff exerted before I arrived. The first room we were put in was nothing like the room we booked from the website. The mattress was so sunken in the middle that if you placed a bottle of water on one side, it couldn't resist the gravitational pull into the center gully. The pillows were paper thin. Worse yet, there was blood on the comforter and orange grease stains (or very old blood) on every single part of the linens (pillow cases - check, sheets - check, towels - check). Atleast they smelled fresh, right? Wrong - apparently bugs loved the fresh smell because there were bugs crawling inside the sheets as well. I awoke after the first night with a cacophony of bites across my foot and lower leg and managed to snap some photos of the bugs in the sheets for management. Thankfully, a hot shower after a long trip can melt away the stress, right? Wrong again - zero hot water. On day one, day ten and I expect today, there wasn't hot water from the shower, the bathroom sink or the kitchenette. Not even slightly warm water. The towels were thread-bare, but not just as an expression. They were literally remnants of a towel that consisted of a few threads, desperately clinging to each other to preserve their status as a TOWEL and not a bunch of strings in a knot. Coupled with that, there was dustballs and hair all over the washroom and stain up and down the external toilet bowl which were easily wiped away with toiler paper. So much for health and safety. After shouting down to management, we were given a new room which had all of the same challenges as above, stunk like someone had been smoking in it with the doors shut all week and the WiFi signal worked if you pushed your bed into the corner of the room, stood on it and held your phone up to the ceiling. You can imagine how well this works for a business traveler with +5hrs/day of Zoom calls. "No, I'm fine Cheryl. It must be your Wifi!" The bathroom in this unit had roaches on the walls and ceiling but at this point, the surprise was wasted as our spirit as business travellers was broken and we were mere prisoners to this space. In a perfect world, this would all be forgotten after speaking to management but at Ocean Spray, when they have you as a Covid19 quarantine guest, you cannot leave your room at any point and can barely communicate to the outside world for help. Despite relaying photos to the Chief of Medical who called the conditions 'atrocious' and promised to send someone to check in on us, the 10-days we waited for our results had zero check-ins from the gov or aid offered. Not one call or text to ask for our temperature, nobody from the front desk checked in and only once in 10-days that someone came to drop fresh towels and sheets. Could this trip get any worse? Yes. Finally, after losing a string of calls with prospective business partners due to the lack of connectivity, we demanded a taxi to be moved to new Approved Lodging on the other side of the island. The entire world was aglow with possibility and promise as the units were clean, WiFi was booming and hotel staff spoke to you like a welcomed guest. Upon advising Ocean Spray that we were leaving because they had just cost us 10-days of business with their failure to provide basic amenities (connectivity, access to food and drinking water, clean bedding etc) , they immediately ran up charges on our card. But wait - didn't the government just run a national TV broadcast stating that hoteliers should seek this reimbursement from them directly? Not to fear, as they'd rather transfer that stress to a foreign visitor to communicate with the government. At the new lodging, we met other guests who had shorter stays at Ocean Spray but all the same stories - bugs in the bed and around the unit, blood splatters on walls and sheets (mosquito explosions, hopefully), ZERO WIFI access for the week and guests who had also gone a few days pecking at leftovers with no connectivity to order meals or fresh water. Objectively speaking, all of the potential for a location like Ocean Spray has been wasted by the quality of amenities and service delivered. It could be an idyllic, eco paradise on the South Coast but instead was filled with angry, starving and outraged guests who were overpromised and under-delivered. Maybe it was the surge of quarantine guests that boosted their attendance but most of these issues are minimum viable amenities to get right. We've traveled all over the world, from Mexico surf towns to the Maldives and we know an eco lodge from a Four Seasons so we tether our expectations to match. Normally, we'd give independent business owners the benefit of the doubt and skip the review (unless its a positive one, which we also write in great detail on one of our travel blogs), but in this case - people need to know how awful the experience was. The minute we left Ocean Spray, the sun burst from behind the clouds and Barbados' warm reputation wrapped us tightly in its arms, whispering in our ears, "Come with me, child, tomorrow is a new day."
