    not the worst hotel

I stayed here for a few nights at various times in the month of April and May of 2015. Firstly the location is not in a very good place, lots of construction and vacant lots in the area which gives out an air of desolation. People light fires of garbage at night which gives off an unpleasant smell of burning plastic. I stayed in 3 different rooms and they where in almost the same state of decay, showers that barely worked , telephone not working, air conditioning barely working, light fixtures hanging by their wires. Staff fairly competent for the country. had a problem getting a receipt for a meal in the restaurant which delayed my departure. My room was paid for me so l have no idea of the price. Other people with whom l was working stayed at the Palm Beach and said it was much better. The only good thing is the bistro El Niro which is almost opposite.

    Shabby and Neglected

Considering the fact that the state of 90% hotels in Ouagadougou is in pretty bad shape, this hotel is more or less decent by Burkina standards. The room (in which I stayed) was quite big, but its maintenance was not upto the mark, at all. Pros:- (1) Good Location. It is not too far from the airport and wholesale market. (2) Nice and quite at night because it is not on the main road. (3) Nice seating area in the open, by the swimming pool. Cons:- (1) Very badly maintained. (2) The hand held shower in my room was not working. My request to fix it, at the reception went in vain. (3) Only 1 plug point in the entire room. No plug points in the bathroom. (4) Dirty and dusty cabinets. (5) Safe was not working even though it was provided in the room. (6) Dim flickering light bulb in the room. Made the environment in the room gloomy. (7) Sometimes the room service came to clean as early as 7.30 - 8.00 am. (8) WiFi hardly worked.

    Badly managed !

This hotel is very centrally located ( close to the airport and also with easy access to the heart of Ouaga but doesn't seem to take advantage of the location. It seems down right dirty with dust all over - even in the reception lounge. The good thing about the room was the comfortable bed and it did provide me with a good night's rest. Internet was very average and also there weren't enough plug points to connect the various gadgets one has- mobile charger, laptop charger etc. The shower did not have a curtain and so after the shower we had water all over and flowing back into the room as well. Breakfast was pretty average as by the time I went ( 9 am ), they ran out of most stuff but made an omelette for me. Fruits, juice and other stuff had nearly finished by then and they weren't keen to refill either. Overall, it was quite a disappointment.

    Shabby and Disappointing

After three weeks on the road in West Africa we decided to treat ourselves to a night in a nice hotel before catching the plane home. The Bradt guide listed the Pacific Hotel as "upmarket", and my husband was able to book it for me through Expedia, so we thought we were good to go. What we got, for more than twice the price of the modest and charming place we stayed on our way in (Villa Yiri Suma), was a dirty, shabby hotel with absolutely nothing to recommend it. I have traveled a lot in West Africa and I have stayed in plenty of hotels of similar quality - but none of them cost anything near what I paid for this! The hotel is centrally located, but that is not necessarily a good thing. The blocks around the Pacific Hotel are particularly bad - vacant lots, plenty of garbage, annoying street vendors... We generally walk around Ouaga and on previous stays have not worried about walking after dark because there are usually lots of people in the streets and there are night watchmen at the entrances of virtually all the buildings. The desolation of this area made it creepy and uncomfortable to walk after dark (remember that the sun sets around 6:30 pm so this is not late night). A good hotel in Ouaga is an oasis from the heat, dirt and craziness of the city - a place to recharge yourself for the next dive in. The Pacific Hotel brings the city right in with you. The main lobby is dirty and dingy. Its restroom is filthy and stinks of urinal cakes and piss. The pool area was dirty and surrounded with broken patio furniture. The restaurant was a cavernous, ambiance-free space that reeked of rancid fat. It was completely empty when we peeked in and the single person there (waitress? hostess?) looked perplexed when we asked to see a menu. She produced what looked like the only menu in the place - an ancient document entombed in curling and separating lamination spattered with what we hoped was old food. If you have ever eaten in a cheap hotel or "western" restaurant anywhere in West Africa, you know what was on offer. Our room had a view of a vacant lot filled with garbage. The room itself was dirty and had absolutely no amenities of any sort. The twin beds were preposterously narrow, but they were relatively comfortable and unlike everything else in the hotel, the bedding was not completely threadbare. The layout of the room was rather amusing. Easily a third of the floor space was taken up by an enormous bathing room with a huge tub, shower and sink, and a somewhat smaller but still commodious WC with sink built in what had clearly once been a balcony. This arrangement would have been great were it not for the fact that what had once been an external window was now a huge hole in the wall affording absolutely no privacy between the two bathrooms. But neither did the hole provide access - it was necessary to go out of the WC, through the main room and in through the other door to have a shower. All that said, the people who worked the front desk were friendly and efficient, as were the doormen, the security patrol and the guy who drives the shuttle to the airport. We checked out at 11:00 AM and they stored our bags all day and gave us a free shuttle ride to the airport that evening.

    Pilgrimage to Dads roots

My dad and I stayed at the Pacific Hotel on May 7 2019. During my visit to discover his roots and to find out a little bit more about him. The hotel was too expensive but their African/ Continental style buffet was not bad.
