Beautiful property with amazing ocean views and access

We spent several nights at this property and had an amazing experience. You are directly on the ocean. The restaurant had nice food and great entertainment in the evenings. There were fire dancers, Magicians, and an event planned every night. Our room had a nice King bed and was updated. The property is well maintained and really beautiful. I'm rating them as a 4 due to the fresh water situation. Apparently it is not recommended to drink the water. We were not told about this and when we asked the front desk on day two the lady made it sound like drinking the water was really a bad idea. Sure wish they had told this from the beginning.

    Perfect

Its our first day here and we are having a wonderful time. Laid back Caribbean style. Food is good, drinks are strong, beach is beautiful. The room is an upstairs king and is very private and comfortable.

    ROACHES!!!

I just returned home from St. Croix. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy my stay. The Downright Trifling My room (#24) in Building B was INFESTED with roaches. From the moment I entered the room until I checked out, I was fighting and killing roaches all day and night. Listen, before you think I'm a preMadonna, I expect a lady bug, water beetle or ant here and there. I've traveled all over the world, so I know how to temper my first world expectations. No, there was an entire army of roaches. They were everywhere - climbing on the bed, my luggage, in the shower and sink in the bathroom, they were even climbing on the ceiling, making them hard to kill. After killing about a dozen or so roaches minutes after I entered the room after checking in, I called the Front Desk to inform them of the issue and to request to be moved to another room. I was advised that the entire resort had a roach issue, so moving me would not solve the problem. The attendant offered to send someone out the next morning to spray. I was happy and relieved with this offer. I'm thinking, with a professional treatment, I may have to deal with one or two over the next 5 days, but not an army. HA! The next morning a Latino male shows up with a bottle of domestic Raid that you can get at any convenience store. Having dealt with roaches in my apartment in my 20s, I knew spraying Raid was like putting a bandaid on a gunshot wound. However, the man was kind enough to leave the entire bottle with me when I asked if he could come back and spray again if I saw more. I kept the bottle on the nightstand next to the bed, as I found them climbing up the bed one night. I even took the bottle with me to the bathroom in the middle of the night when I went to pee. It is one thing to see a roach in the bathroom when you wake up in the middle of the night to go relieve yourself, but it is something altogether different when you have them crawling on you while you sleep. The Palms at Pelican Cove owner needs to use a professional pest service to treat the issue until it is no longer an issue. It is for this reason, and this reason alone, that I did not enjoy my stay. I was so petrified of one hitchhiking in my luggage that my normal 30 minute re-packing on my final day took 2 1/2 hours, because I wanted to shake everything, wash everything and look into every crook and crevice of everything I had packed to make sure there were no roaches or roach eggs coming back with me to my house. I even wrapped my luggage in tall garbage bags that I got from the housekeeper when I arrived to my car at the airport. When I got home, I left my luggage in the garage and used a Raid Concentrated Deep Reach Fogger, something I found handy when I got rid of the roaches in my apartment in my 20s, to use on my luggage just in case one sneaked in somewhere. I closed the door to the garage and will leave them out there overnight. This roach issue ruined my entire trip. It was exhausting work trying to enjoy my room and not have them totally take over. The Bad Safe - The safe in my room had a pre-set code. I could not change it. I have never had accommodations that offered a safe that I could not customize the security code. The Front Desk attendant gave me the code over the phone while I had her on speaker. The housekeeper was in the room, so the code that the Front Desk Attendant swore only her and the owner knew was now known by the housekeeper. Needless to say, I kept my valuables locked up in my luggage. It was better that way given I didn't unpack, preferring to keep my luggage sealed to avoid roaches getting inside. And yes, I saw roaches climbing over my luggage, too. I did say they were everywhere! Phone - Speaking of phones. My room did not have one. I travel all over the world. This is the FIRST time I have ever had accommodations where a phone was not made available. When I called the Front Desk, I had to use my personal cell phone. Ridiculous. Grounds - You can tell the owner does not care about the grounds whatsoever. The beach is riddled with seaweed and trash. There are overgrown weeds all throughout the sand. I almost tripped one day on a weed vine trying to get to the beach. Be careful if you decide to walk the beach, there's all types of trash hidden in the sand. Bell Boy - There is NO ONE to help you carry your luggage to your room, to show you where your room is or to give you a small tour of your room. You are on your own. Lifeguard - There aren't any. Not for the beach or the pool. Swim at your own risk. Employee Morale - Everyone was really nice, but you can tell morale is low. Poolside Service - There wasn't any. You want a drink? Go to the bar and get it yourself. Or better yet, be like me, buy a bottle of rum at the store and put it in your thermal bottle with ice and just sip on it all day. The Good Restaurant - Service was slow, but the food was decent. Nothing to write home about. Entertainment - On Fridays and Saturdays, they have live music. I didn't realize how much I missed live music with the pandemic, until the Saturday night band played. I sang along to every single song. Unfortunately, you cannot dance. You would be breaking a federal law. Yes, a law! I was told by another guest that you can be fined $10,000 for such an offense. Blame it on Rona. It sucks, but it is no fault of the resort. Overall: Had there not been any roaches, I would have actually enjoyed my stay. I don't need much to be content. Even with the messy grounds, I could have made due, but fighting roaches all day and night just spoiled it for me, and then worrying that they would come home with me, is not cool. No one should spend their vacation worrying over reckless abandonment of the resort's owners. They can control this. They just choose not to. That aside, I think the resort is not fully manned. Everyone, except the Front Desk attendant, seemed stretched and overworked. With that, the service sucked (but to no fault of the employees).

    Good Property Though Currently Understaffed

Overall I really liked my stay here. I shall be more detailed below. Property: Very good. The main building has a large seating area, small pantry, bar and restaurant. There's also a decent sized pool at the main building. The rooms are in smaller buildings within walking distance of the lobby. Everything was well lit and felt safe and there's plenty of parking. I will note none of the ice machines worked at either room cluster. Room: Excellent. Air conditioning worked well. There was plenty of power. Wifi worked well and the shower got hot. Everything you want from a modern hotel. Also the king balcony rooms opened directly onto the beach and had a nice balcony. The bathrooms were great and it was nice having a full sized fridge and a good TV plus a large closet. I have zero complaints about the room. Dining: Here's where I do have issues. They clearly have not brought back a full dining staff and the ones they do have are overwhelmed. This wasn't a problem at breakfast when the restaurant was lightly attended but when we went to Saturday dinner it was awful. Long waits on orders and they brought my fiancé the wrong entrée once and then the wrong sides with the second entrée. Salads and appetizers also came out after the main courses. There was no attempt at service recovery either. Overall I enjoyed my stay though the dinner was a major source of frustration.
