  Fresh air and good food

  Hotel Schoenblick is a good family run, provincial hotel with a better than good restaurant so the half-board option is very good value. Staff are very pleasant and all the younger staff have excellent English. As you expect with Austrian hotels everything is spotlessly clean and everything well maintained. The free transfer from/to Kalgenfurt's small airport worked well. We sent an email giving our arrival flight details and a people carrier was there to meet us. Most guests come here by car and to see most of the wider region a car is desirable - but train travel using the complimentary Woerthesee Card is very reasonable 11.50 return for two people to Villach! When we were there most of the guests were Austrain, German or Italian and were older couples or families with younger children. (Dogs are allowed which is good/bad depending on your view!) The very good breakfast buffet reflects the guests tastes. Room sizes vary (with price) and our first night was in a really quite cramped room at the back of the hotel but this was readily changed for a bigger room in the same price band looking towards the lake . (We booked using Expedia and no room/price choices were offered on that site.) The hotel is quite close to the lake but there is also a very steep hill to climb down/up to get there/back. The alternative walk avoiding the steepest climb is 1.5km longer but if you take the free bikes on offer then this isn't so bad. Becuase of this I cant recommend this hotel for anyone with walking difficulties and no car. The walk into Velden town centre is about 15 mins (longer coming back uphill) and taxis seemed to us to be expensive we were charged 6 and 8.50. The walk to the hotel's lakeside bathing area about the same. The weather we had was not untypical and changes from hot sun 30C to heavy rain happened in a day. How could Fam Schneider make there hotel package better? Offer coffee at no extra charge at dinner. And a couple more internet terminals would cut the queues to check emails. TIP: If you book half-board and want to miss a dinner then skip the BBQ. TIP: Politzsky Koditorei for cakes and pastries at their cafe or at the Casino cafe.

  Good 'family hotel' with a view on the Wörther See

  Hotel Schoenblick is a family hotel with the charm and disadvantages that go with it. At the time we stayed there it seemen to be full with regular guests who knew each other and the staff of the hotel very well. Which can be nice but we sometimes felt a bit like 'outsiders'. And although we were told at the Tourist Office that the hotel was famous for it's cuisine we were a bit disappointed when we had diner there. A run of the mill menu and quality. The advantage of staying here is that you are very near the centre of Velden, about 10 minutes by foot (although it's rather steep up/down) and various hikes and biking trips can be started right from the hotel entrance. The rooms are spacious and well equiped although a bit old-fashioned.

  In need of a revamp

  The hotel is very nice and is well located. It has a nice view (more than of the lake of the other side of the lake, but very nice and green indeed). The staff is also very friendly and helpful (beware of the lady running the restaurant: quite straightforward). The prices are a bit too high for what it offers (we are partly to blame, because we arrived to Velden without a reservation). the food is poor (I got the impression that it is what they have been cooking since the hotel was founded). the welness instalations are good. The rooms are OK, although a bit run down in some parts. Maybe with a bit of a remodelling and a better cuisine it would be great! Indeed, it seemed that the guests kind of knew each other and sometimes we felt a bit as "outsiders", as another reviewer as mentioned. In synthesis: good hotel and very nice staff, but some things to improve...

  Wonderful Austrian hospitality and more...

  We were collected from the station by Rene and taken to the hotel on the outskirts of Velden. We were upgraded to a larger room with efficient Wifi ( important for us as we run a business). Our room was comfortable with a balcony overlooking the lake and distant hills. The hotel was quiet, but all the facilities were available. What immediately strikes you here is the cleanliness of everywhere in this hotel. The spa area was spotless and our room was cleaned daily to a high standard. What also is clear is that the staff like working here...they are cheerful, friendly and nothing is too much trouble. We could name all the staff, but even those we did not meet ( the chef) made our stay memorable.Unusually for us we took half board and we were glad we did the food is five star standard. If you like walking then this is a wonderful base on the south side of Lake Wörthersee. Walks are "moderate" in difficulty and well sign posted...wonderful countryside. We did 45 miles in 4 days here...If you go in the summer the lake temperature is 26 degrees (thermals).. We were sorry not to stay longer...Rene took us back to the station...We have had the good fortune to travel the world and this experience for us has been one of the best...

  Wunderschonblick

  Rene, Nina and staff run an hotel redolent of all that is good in Austrian hospitality. My wife and I stayed at the Schonblick for a fortnight in late May early June and were treated like old friends even though it was our first visit. From the greeting on our arrival to Rene's farewell at Velden railway station everyone was helpfulness personified.Our room ,and the hotel, was kept scrupulously clean, the bed very comfortable. Austrian cuisine abounded at both breakfast and dinner time impeccably served by, among others, Claudia, Naomi, David and Roberto. In fact ,with their individual personalities, meal times were all the more enjoyable.Thoroughly recommended.
