Lovely hotel in the Old City

The service i got here was fantastic, the friendly staff were on hand to help with all our needs. Housekeeping even left a note about the temperature changes between day and nightfall, and advised on clothing options. Rooms were spacious and clean, with a little lounge of sorts. Its located closer to Bai Long Guang Chang (, just to the cab driver doesnt stop you at the ZhongYi Market (, which is a longer walk.

    Quaint and Charming!

This little hotel does just about everything right. It's clean and nicely decorated, the service was excellent, the breakfast was exceptional. It's very conveniently located although a bit hard to find but that goes for the entire area with so many alleys going whichever way. We also liked the decor - Chinese and stylish, not the ubiquitous western-style lodging that gets boring and is uncharacteristic of the local. I do have two suggestions - 1) be "brave" to advise the clients to abide by both the town ordinance and the hotel's own "No Smoking" signage. I've found the smoking guests quickly put out the cigarettes when asked. 2) The lighting in the bathroom especially the shower area really needs to be brighter so one can see what one steps onto especially when the tiles are dark charcoal grey.

Has great potential, turned out horrible.

Our experience here was so bad I'm using mobile data here in China to get the review out quick and hopefully save another poor traveler from this place. We had 3 nights total at this hotel. To start with the few good thinges that lured us in. Fantastic location in the souther end of the Lijiang old town. It has the style of an old inn and fits in very nicely amoung the old architecture. Room was very clean and comfortable. Then all the bad. The rooms are spread out over several buldings, we were placed in one that was in no ways connected to the main compound and had a good 200 metres to walk to get to the lobby and breakfast area. We barely got a wifi connection in our room. They also require you to log in through a page to get access. When checking in we were given a slip of paper with a wifi code that didn't work. It took the front desk 3 employees and a good 30 minutes to connect my phone to their wifi. When connected the access was unusually slow. Hotel had 1 employee in total who only spoke very basic English. Walls in the hotel are extremely thin and you will be woken by the Chinese tour groups who wake up rather early and start making a lot of noise. Our window overlooked a smelly alley between the building which boasted a broken toilett, two broken fax machines and assorted other trash. Smoking was ignored by staff in the lobby and breakfast area making it hard for non smokers to spend time there. The worst part; The second day we woke up to a room without electric power or hot water. We immediatly contacted the front desk and after spending 5 minutes explaining the concept of no electricity the only response we could get was "Sorry" and "fix later". The breakfast area was completely dark and despite there being a few bowls with chopped fruit/vegetables we decided to play it safe and eat out to get something filling and tasty. As the power had gone out during the night our phones and camera were in desperate need of charging so after being out for 4 hours we headed back to the hotel to charge everything. To our surprise the power was still out. I again talk to the front desk and got to talk to the manager who was the only person with a basic grasp of English. She told us that it was not her problem that the electricity was out, there would be someone to look at it at 17:00. She was in no way interested in helping us out in any way and seemed rather annoyed that I didn't accept matters as they were and simply walk away. I tried several times to first politely as if there was any assistance she could provide or if there was anything they could offer as we had paid rather steeply for our stay and that lack of electricity and hot water for a full day was a major drawback. I finally gave up due to rudeness and lack of English skills and gave my travel agency a call. They immediatly contacted the hotel and were offered a refund for our last night if we checked out at once. Under no circumstances would we be given a discount on the room or anything else. They also pointed out again that the electrician would be there at 17:00. The agency said that the hotels they had used previously were fully booked but that they would happily help us find another. We would preffer to avoid the hassle of packing, moving our luggage and checking in to a new hotel so they contacted to hotel again. We were now offered to check out or receive a 30% discount on dinner at their restaurant (which didn't have electricity either and is simply an insulting offer), in addition to some fruit and tea. We agreed with our agency that if the power wasn't back on again in a timely manner after 17:00 that we would switch hotel and our agency found one on standby. Before we headed out again the hotel staff delivered a plate of cut up melon and some tea to our room. After we returned from dinner at 18:30 we found that electricity had been restored, so we stayed there the last night, but there still wasn't hot water available when we went to bed at 22:30. If that had been everything this hotel would have gotten a 2 star review. 06:45 the following morning we were awoken by a sharp sound as the hotel lost power yet again. When we tried the shower at 07:30 there was no hot water either. Breakfast area and lobby was full of sigarette smoke and the food selection was even worse than the night before. Despite the hotels claims that the entire area had lost power we quite clearly observed electricity in use in all the surrounding buildings. In the end we very strongly recommend staying anywhere else. The old town boasts a multitude of both smaller and larger inns and hotels. In addition there are several larger chain hotels surrounding the old town. Manxin has the potential to be a nice and decent place to stay but it desperatly needs some critical maintenance and a change in ownership and management. As it stands, avoid at all costs.

  • Untapped potential

This hotel supposed to be a 4 stars' hotel but it doesnt act like that. It is an authentic ancient house located in a quiet place in the old city of Lijiang. As a family (4 people) we had a 2 bedrooms' suite. It was a nice decorated room although in an odd way (a piano in the tiny Livingroom/entrance hall?). it has 3 T.V., one in each room. The amenities in the bathroom were o.k. and it was rather clean but the bath curtain was mostly spotted with mold that affected the cleanliest feeling. The coffee kit contained kettle and 2 cups (for 4 people!) and barely 2 coffee packs, no sugar nor tea. The breakfast was o.k. and if we asked for something they tried their best to assist us. The staff is nice and friendly but the problem is that they dont speak English. In summary, this hotel has a great location and its quiet o.k. if you stay there for 2 nights but if you stay for longer you should consider taking another hotel even out of the old city. This hotel has a great potential to be a fine boutique hotel but it still needs tuning.

    Charming!

This is a beautiful hotel with very ancient style of decoration which gives the real china feel. We stayed in the 2 Bedroom Family Suite. Our suite came with a bath, a nicely decorated living area and 2 bedrooms. The bedrooms were rather small but comfy nonetheless. The hotel was clean and the staff were welcoming. Breakfast was provided, a simple one but with a good enough variety. Its abt 15 mins walk from the ancient town. There are several restaurants near the hotel too.
