    Average, not 4*

The hotel is obviously past it's heyday and being run on a shoestring at the moment. Having said that, the spa area consisting of fairly large pool, multi massage Jacuzzi, two saunas and a steam room was excellent, all working and clean. The location is good, a 10-15 minute near flat walk to the main gondola. Our room had a great view of the ski mountain, however the walls were paper thin and adjoining the games room could hear every shot on the pool table until gone midnight every night. The room became very dusty by the end of the week, so much so that we could write in it in front of the TV, not a hard place to clean by any means. The bathroom was not cleaned all week. Towels were only changed once, on the last day, even after leaving in the bath a few times, according to Balkan Holidays book at reception this alone actually makes the hotel a 2* The main disappointment was the "Lobby Bar" which was permanently closed for the duration of our stay! New Year's eve was a disaster, we arrived back at the hotel for our half-board meal to find the buffet restaurant closed. It turned out the expectation was that we book new years eve dinner in the main restaurant, however this was never mentioned to us at any point. They had to give us something, so sat us with what could have been the owner and their teenage children and served us inedible food which was more salt than anything else. All other guests had seemingly booked their tables, and I don't think it was a coincidence that we were the only British in the hotel either. All other days the breakfast and basic buffet dinner were good, although don't sit right at the back of the restaurant as you will be put off by the pot-wash eating scraps from plates as they go through the hatch! Have no problem with that if she's hard up for a few pounds but not in full view please!! We will definitely be back to Bansko, but not to this hotel.

    Pretty hotel.not a 4*.bad food.nice spa.

We stayed for a week in Jan 2020 to go skiing in Bansko which was lovely. There are lots of nice things about this hotel but firstly dont go half board as the food is really bad, and I mean really bad. The breakfast is what you would expect but it's the evening meals which are the main problem. The meat is the cheapest and driest with minced chicken pieces, they don't have the hot plates turned on so everything is cold and dry, cold rice overcooked and left out, cold half cooked potatoes, no tea or coffee with evening meal etc etc. after a couple of days we started to go out for meals as it was just awful. Local bars and restaurants have some really lovely food, we went to Gingers Restaurant a few times and it was excellent. There is a restaurant attached to the hotel which is open to the public, when there aren't enough guests for hotel dinner they let you have a meal in the restaurant BUT you don't get restaurant food off the menu you get the same awful stuff as in the hotel that you pick off a 'hotel guest' list, I've never seen anything like it. We sent back our dry un-eaten chicken and they didn't even ask why as I'm sure they are well aware how bad it is. Really poor and disappointing for what was meant to be 4 star. The location of the hotel is great as it's about ten mins walk to the gondola station and far enough from the main bars to be quiet when you get back after skiing. We were given a twin bed room but wanted a double, The beds are very comfortable though. There are no tea or coffee making facilities in the room. The spa facilities are really nice, sauna, warm swimming pool, steam room, russian steam room, hot hydropool. We went for an hour most evenings and it was very relaxing after skiing. The hotel itself is very pretty with great views of the mountains. So I would recommend going but without the food option. And take a travel kettle if you like a morning cup of tea. This hotel is a bit old fashioned for what Bansko has become as it is now more like Marmaris in Turkey or Ayia Napa, attracting lots of young snowboarders. Every bar and restaurant you walk past staff are outside harassing you to go in which gets a bit much if you are just going for a walk. We did have a great time skiing, good job they have the snow making cannons on the mountain though as there had been no snow fall for a month and conditions were quite icy. It was advertised as good for beginners but there are some very steep areas on the blue runs, and snowboarders stopping and falling all over the place so you have to dodge them. The ski instructors are great, I had a 2 hour private lesson from Ulen ski school and felt much more confident after.

    Unfriendly

My aunt was unlucky enough to stay here, when we stayed in the Lion. She was travelling on her own. Her room was a very pokey room on the top floor with a very compact shower room. She was able to look out the window only when she stood on the bed! The food, was not good. She was very unfortunate to break her Tibula skiing. The care from the hotel was appalling. If we hadn't been in the hotel next door she would of had nothing to eat or drink despite being half board. Access to the hotel is steps with a steep wooden ramp that the receptionist rammed my aunt's broken leg into whilst trying to get her into the hotel. The only good thing, was that the spa was quite nice. There is no hotel bar, or any kind of atmosphere at all. Don't stay here.

    4* facilities, but 1* food - don't eat here

On the plus side - lovely hotel with great spa facilities - very relaxing after a day on the slopes. We had a huge room, right at the top, with good views to the Pirin/ski area, as well as the other way to the Rila mountains, and an indoor 'balcony' (a raised seating area/lookout point), which was a perfect place to admire the view, whilst keeping warm. The only thing that would have improved the room would be the provision of tea- & coffee-making facilities in the rooms, which I would expect from a 4* hotel. Hotel in a good location, 5-10 mins walk from the ski lift, 20-25 mins walk to the old town. On the minus side - The only thing which let the hotel's 4* rating down was the food. There was not much variety with the suppers from night to night - the same type of salad (tomatoes, cucumber, olives, feta-style cheese, onions), followed by some pieces of chicken / pork / fish, sometimes a bit leathery having been out for an hour or two keeping warm - with little for vegetarians apart from cheese /egg / the vegetables that accompanied the meat & fish. Puddings were a little reminiscent of the 1970s... And as for the chicken schnitzel on our first night, it bore no resemblance to chicken in shape, texture, colour or taste, and was quite the worst thing I have tasted for many years. I couldn't eat it. We ended up on several nights walking down to the old town to eat in the many mekhanas (taverns) which had good food and more atmosphere. I recommend not going half-board here. However, the buffet breakfasts were fine, plenty for hungry skiiers, and a reasonable choice. Another minus was that the TV in the dining area was always on 'Box TV' with music videos. I'm no prude but considered these videos, which almost all involved very scantily clad girls in provocative poses, to be quite sexist and offensive to watch, particularly while having breakfast, and inappropriate for a family hotel.
