Past Glory of the Mother Land

Signs of past glory abound, but the hotel is out dated, the rooms need renovation, the food was poor quality for breakfast, the staff was not helpful and sometimes rude. Course these lost Americans were probably not their favorite guests even though we tried to be very friendly and demonstrate our happiness in being guests in this great land.

Outdated hotel, nice rooms, breakfast OK

I stayed here for 2 weeks in Sep 2013 on a business trip and found the hotel OK as Russian standards go, but really outdated on the decor. The rooms are pretty spacious, with full fridge and interesting mini bar, only Russian TV channels available though however there is free wi-fi available throughout the hotel which is fantastic (some western hotels should take note!). Room was always clean - but please note - no-one speaks English! Breakfast was an interesting affair, with salad, eggs, cold meats and whatever was left over from dinner - but it was edible. We held a 2 day conference in the hotel and the room was up to standard, with projector and facilities you would expect in any business hotel. The best thing about the hotel though is the bar outside - the best beer in town and cheap too!

It's amazing! Come back to USSR

If you want was come back to USSR, or was see soviet hotel interior, you have to visit this hotel! It's amazing :) breakfast at soviet restaurant, soviet elevators with "green button" for go, soviet fridge and more soviet attributes :) And small bonus - excellent view to the city from last floor.

This Has to be The Setting for the Next AHS Series

Oh my word, if American Horror Story and the Shining had a baby this would be it. Ive been to Russia a few times and have low expectations but this one sets the bottom bar. First the good - its clean, the sheets were fresh and its cheap. Then the bad: staff even by Russian standards were cold, rude and unhelpful and practically nobody speaks English. I didnt realize you had to buy breakfast when you book the room. When I tried to buy breakfast in the am it was like id murdered somedodys Grand mother. The hotel is old and shabby (peeling wall paper, scuffed wooden floors and chipped paint everywhere) and doesnt look like its ever had any renovation from when it was built. The rooms are small and grubby and I had 3 light bulbs blow in 2 days and the ac just seemed to be a vent that the wind howled through. The hall lighting is motion activated but thats intermittent and I found myself in pitch black multiple times. The tub had been repaired multiple times and at 6 tall I couldnt sit on the toilet because there wasnt enough legroom to the wall. And the worst part - the elevators. I think they must have got them from a coal mine that went out of business in the 60s. They seem to be chain driven with all the jerking, creaking and groaning; they are just plain scarey. The hotel isnt far from the airport but once you exit Volgograd the roads are terrible, especially over the dam and it takes an hour to get there. It was World Cup season and this was the only room I could get, if you are REALLY desperate it is ok, but if you have a choice stay elsewhere.

Terrible experience: The worst hotel I have ever stayed at!

I should start by saying that I am an elite traveler and have averaged about 75 nights a year in hotels over the last 8 years and I have stayed in wonderful rooms from Tokyo to Thailand, London to New York and beyond. During the recently completed World cup in Russia I booked a room for a few nights at the Akhtuba hotel to see the Nigeria Vs Iceland game. The hotel at the time was listed as a 4 star hotel but I surmise that it was no better than a 1.5 at best. The rooms were old and dingy, the beds were loud and unconformable and the bath room... oh the bath room, I tried not to touch anything when I took a shower and even the door would not shut. For the amount I paid; about 4000 rubles a night I expected at a minimum a clean and quiet, not to mention safe place. It turns out that all sorts of people had access to the building and it often felt unsafe - so unsafe that I spend my last night on an airport chair as a dreamed of a better experience in St Petersburg where I would watch my next game. Finally I could have sworn that I was put in a bad room that wasn't used regularly; perhaps there were too many guests in town. I will never go back here - please don't book a room here if you are from out of town.
