    Delivered a training

I had a training course for 3 days, The attendants of the training venues from the hotel side were not available all the time to provide help. However, they are very polite, and when contacted, they tried their best to help.

    5 star Hotel that isn't

First thing I must point out - I am staying in this hotel on a work trip for 4 weeks. So getting to know the place. I was told that princes and sheikhs come here - I don't think so! There are a couple of palaces nearby but the Tiara does not even begin to live up to that standard. Location wise there are some shops, couple of pharmacies, bank, cafe's, mini markets etc in close proximity you can walk. That's good. However as others have mentioned there is the military air base literally across the road. I have been awoken early in the morning around 6am by planes taking off, noisy and irritating to say the least. Facilities; yes it has a decent enough gym and a pool but you can't swim the full length because it is so shallow at the shallow end you crack your knees on the bottom. Also has a steam room and sauna and they do massages. It is presentable and the bed is comfortable though I had to request a softer pillow than the railway sleepers they provide. Bathroom ok but there is no shaver point! Really?, in this day and age. I brought my electric toothbrush and had to go out and buy a normal one because there was nowhere to recharge my electric one. The bath is standard home size so nothing special. Turned on the over bath shower and all that came out was dirty brown water so clearly not used a long time. Two seats in my room, an armchair and a desk chair. Both have completely lost their support and I am having to put a pillow on one and a cushion on the other. TV in room is HD but limited English speaking channels. Big gripe is the food. Have been here two weeks now and I could tell you what will be served up every night with my eyes shut. I know it is 4 weeks and that is unusual but seriously bored of the food already. All they can offer you to drink on an evening is water (no sparkling) and coke and 7 up. Therefore purchased my own litre bottle of tonic water at the Carrefour to take to evening meal. Waiting staff are friendly but service is lousy. My colleague and I have used plates piled by the side of us every night and we are often the only ones in. Food is kept warm so I have learnt to ask for a plate to be heated or otherwise the food goes cold very quickly. Breakfasts are sub standard. Stir fried chicken and beef, cold pancakes - no maple syrup and kids cereal. Again, bought my own. Coffee is also out of a machine and tastes odd! So this place is NOT a 5 star hotel, it is however a 5 star travel lodge. Over priced for what you get and I would not want to stop here again.

    Stylish and friendly

My first trip to Saudi Arabia and I was unsure what to expect with regard to almost everything. The Tiara was reassuringly normal in almost all aspects of its operation, and had a strong touch of classy elegance, especially in the lobby and lounge. The room was spacious and comfortable; the bathroom roomy and efficient (shower and separate full-size bath). The breakfast buffet was pretty good (wide selection of international and local dishes) and the coffee better than in many hotels. Dinner (which I had only once) was delightful under the supervision of an attentive and friendly manager. Lots of impressive, inlaid marble floors and deep carpets. The health club was first class - excellent gym, 12m pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room as well as spa services like massage available. (I nearly made a fool of myself by trying to get in during 'Ladies' time' - 1-4pm each day - but was saved from embarrassment by a passing guest). The hotel arranged a punctual taxi for me to return to the airport, though it was a lot more expensive than a local taxi or an Uber vehicle. Though not high summer, it was very hot - hovering around 40 degrees C during the middle of the day - so walking around outside was really not an option. The hotel claims 5 stars, but I would agree with other reviewers that it's not quite in that category, though I thought it was very good. All staff with customer contact speak moderate to excellent English. Good value if you don't hit on some of their expensive dates.

Great Hotel. Excellent location for the Expo Center

Stayed here for six nights while in town on business. Which means that while I did sleep in the hotel, we were out of the hotel by 8am and usually wouldn't come back until after 10pm. In terms of conventional hotels in capital cities, Riyadh is an interesting place. The tourism market is just now starting to open and Saudi Arabia has long been a country where you went there for work or for very specific reasons. My interpretation of this seems to be that the typical western hotels are comparatively scarce, leaving room for smaller, local operators. Tiara is one such property. It's well located to the expo center, so if you're going there, it's probably the best hotel in the city. However, the hotel borders the air base, and if you're meetings are at a location on the other side of the base (like ours was), it will take a little extra time fighting traffic as you circle the base. Rush hour traffic in Riyadh could be heavy but nowhere near the hellish traffic you find in many other cities. The hotel has three floors with very well furnished rooms. In fact, all areas of the hotel are handsomely appointed. Plush furniture, rich fabrics - it's a luxurious elegance that seems very Arabian without subscribing to the decor you'd think of in Aladdin. A spacious lobby offers ample space to sit by yourself drinking tea, welcoming guests or sitting for a conversation. Tea and Arabic coffee are available 24/7. I stayed in room 323 which was richly appointed with a comfortable bed, a lounge chair and a side chair that I presume was meant to double as a desk chair, however, there was no desk - only something that resembled a shallow shelf that was in no way conducive to working. Large screen LCD television featured a nice assortment of international channels and even offered some english language programming. The room has ample storage space but only offered a few hangers so if you're traveling with more than 4 items that need hanging, plan accordingly or ask the front desk for more. Complimentary bottled water is offered daily and the room has a water heater to make coffee or tea and a small refrigerator. Westerners tend to love big windows with expansive views. Not so here in Saudi where there's a history of protecting your family and your privacy. As such, the one window is of average size with a protrusion that prevents others from seeing into your window, but it also narrows your field of view. Large, wall-sized drapes increase the privacy and help to keep the room dark. One of the things that seems most striking to me about Saudi culture compared to western culture is the use of water in the bathrooms. Go to a rest room anywhere and water is everywhere. Covering the toilet, all over the floor - everywhere. To the westerner, this seems strange at best and gross at worst, but here this is a sign of cleanliness and respect. As such, it seems that the bathrooms in the hotel are designed for this. Floors are tiled and slighty sloped with a floor drain that readily accommodates water. I'm not sure if this is part of the Arabian aesthetic but no matter how much I tried to keep the water in the shower fully contained, a considerable amount of water would make it's way onto the floor - almost as if the shower was designed in this manner. Just be sure to place the floor towel in the center of the floor, away from the narrow water channel, if you want to keep the floor towel dry. There's a restaurant on the first floor. While we had breakfast here, I did try the dinner buffet our first night after arrival. The dinner buffet costs around US$35 and was decent. Breakfast did, however, feature the stir fried beef from the night before - and I say this because I was the last person to eat at the dinner buffet and the stir fried beef when I left was full. But that's not to worry as it's standard operation procedure at hotels worldwide, plus it's kinda tasty. The breakfast buffet offered juices, fresh fruits, yogurt, an assortment of bakery items, cheeses, cold cuts, cured salmon, veggies and a hot bar that had stir fried beef, stir fried chicken, chicken sausage, beef bacon, pancakes, french toast, scrambled eggs, hard boiled eggs, hot vegetable and then there was an omelette station. Overall, it is a good breakfast buffet. The problem is that they never really change it. After two mornings, you've seen their entire repertoire and it just repeats. By the fifth day, the variety is getting stale. Otherwise, the service in the restaurant is pretty good. A couple of the captains are on it and quickly responsive. One or two of the others don't seem to be as responsive, left me unclear as to whether or not my request was going to be handled, so I went to one of the captains I was sure was going to assist me. In addition, the hotel also features an indoor pool. While I didn't have the chance to go, my colleague went a couple of times and reported it to be perfectly fine. Next trip, I have to make a point to try the pool. A conference center is also part of the hotel and the wedding parties can get a bit raucous. During my stay, on Thursday night (their "Friday night"), I couldn't tell if it was the wedding party or just a neighborhood party that was going on outside well past 3am. The room was pretty well insulated so the noise was really just a muffle, but something to keep in mind is that partying will be happening on Thursday and Friday nights. Overall, my stay was great. A little bit of confusion upon arrival about some administrative details was handled well. The staff is courteous and helpful. I look forward to staying again.
