Werewolf in London moment - turned very friendly

Cutting across the moorlands from st ives to penance we came across the engine inn, a stone building literally in middle of nowhere, we fancied a stop and comfort break and so pulled in, as we walked In through the large door the pub fell quiet and reminded me of the scene in American werewolf where everyone stops and stares, thats where similarities stop, the pub was warm welcoming with a roaring fire and the staff friendly The food we ordered Cornish stew was excellent and we stayed for a few hours. Great craic was had !

Look no further for the quaint country experience!

We had such a lovely stay at the Engine Inn! The countryside views from the garden are absolutely stunning, the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail and chat with the locals. Owner Bianca was so friendly, and she offers an amazing full breakfast for a great value. The rooms are very cozy, with the exposed beams and rustic decor reminiscent of a simpler time. We would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a nice country escape!

Average stay at an appropriate price but prepare for some oddities...

Overall, this was a good hotel as a budget option, but there were some strange aspects. Pros: - Our welcome by the barman was friendly. The pub itself offers a decent selection of the local beers, with Tribute of course on display. - The room was well furnished and the heater worked well in such an isolated area and in a room which is predisposed to being cold (stone walls and wooden door), - TV worked well and was modern. - We stayed in the disabled-accessible room and although we are not disabled, it appears to be well suited for such a person and it is nice to see a hotel offer such a room. - Lovely view across the hills and local area from the pub garden. Cons: - While there is WiFi in the pub, it does not stretch to the rooms and there is no phone signal. Given there are takeaway flyers in the rooms (bit tacky and not a huge boost of confidence for the pub's own food), it's a mystery as to how you are supposed to order! - The ensuite had black mould around most of the fittings and was not particularly appealing. The alarm pull was also situated next to the light fitting and if it is a functional alarm pull, I imagine this causes a lot of issues with accidental activation. - The male staff member (presumably the manager) who showed us our room was not hugely friendly or welcoming and immediately chastised us for not being able to contact us by email - we booked through Booking.com and the email provided was functional as we received email confirmations, so this seemed unnecessary and downright incorrect. He also asked us loudly across the bar if we wanted towels and toilet rolls (allegedly something he had to offer 'on request' due to the "local council" - we did not find this in any other hotel during our trip) and this was a bit unprofessional. Equally, surely everyone will want these items! He alleged that he had had the room and the towels deep-cleaned for covid-19 compliance but this 'deep-cleaning' smelled suspiciously of Febreeze (for the towels) and given my comments on the state of the bathroom, we don't entirely believe this. No toiletries were provided, perhaps to be expected from the price. Checkout in the morning merited an equally apathetic attitude from the manager and he seemed like he wanted to ask us how the stay was but decided against it... I wonder why! - There was lots of noise during the night from the room above where the guests or staff there were constantly walking up and down the wooden floors even at 11pm and midnight and loudly moving furniture. - Bins were overflowing outside our room which was unappealing. - The bathrooms in the pub were not well cleaned, despite the covid-19 compliance posters littered inside. Certainly in the ladies, there was a rota for multiple cleanings a day which had not been filled in for a week! My partner remarked that the men's toilets turned his stomach.

    Never again

I booked The Engine Inn Cornwall through Hotel.com For my plans it was the perfect location for my short break, the first time that Id been out of my home in four months due to Shielding. We arrived around 4pm and shown to our room. Were told that the room had only just been sanitised and made up, good to hear. Left the bags in the room and went for a drink at The Engine Inn before unpacking. On returning to the room it was self-evident that the room was not that clean on closer inspection. Looking at the bed; the sheets were soiled and looked like someone had recently slept in it. Two of the four pillows had no cases on them they were soiled and smelled bad. There were hairs on the sheets see picture attached. It appeared that the bottom sheet had been reversed so it appeared clean and freshly made, see picture attached. From the wrinkled condition of the sheets it would appear to take been recently slept in. We were happy with the location so we sanitised the room and en-suite ourselves we had brought along our own cleaning materials because of my vulnerability. We filled the bin provided in the bathroom to the top with dirty sanitised wipes. Unlike the hotel website pictures there were no towels provided, fortunately we had our own. Returning to The Engine Inn I asked if the sheets could be changed as they were soiled and marked. This request was not received very well. The manager asked if we would like to stay somewhere else but it was likely to be more expensive but he could arrange that. I declined the offer as the location of the accommodation was key to this short break. The manager said that he would have the bedding washed and the bed remade in a few hours. I asked about places to eat and I was told that there was nowhere local mainly due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the manager was very helpful in recommending a reasonable place to eat in Penzance. On our return to the room over two hours later the bedding had been stripped. There were hairs mattress, see picture attached. The mattress was soiled with what looked like blood and urine and had black mould growing on it, see picture attached. I checked the bed side lamp and TV to see if they worked. The side lamp did not work, I tried connecting the lamp to alternative sockets, nothing. I checked the connection between the bulb and table lamp, nothing. The TV had the standby light on, but the remote did not turn the TV on. I removed the batteries from the remote and re-inserted them, nothing. There may have been a less obvious means of turning the TV on but I was not advised. At this point we were still happy to stay with clean sheets at the end of the day the place was well situated and we were only booked in for a few days. Returning to The Engine Inn I mentioned to the manager that the bed side lamp and TV were not working. At this point the manager became enraged that I had dared make any further complaints! To my surprise and total disbelief the manager stated that the marks on the bedding and mattress were not that big! The manager asked that we leave immediately and that we would be refunded our money within three days. This did happen. The time was around 6:30pm. I was self evident that it was pointless trying to negotiate from the body language and tone of voice of the manager. We collected our possessions from the room and drove away in the direction of St Ives the nearest town. My iPhone had no internet coverage at The Engine Inn and there was no internet service available in St Ives. I used my TomTom navigation device to locate hotels and B&Bs and their phone numbers. All the hotels and B&Bs were fully booked in St Ives no surprises there. I was pleasantly surprised how pleasant people were who answered my phone calls. One in particular was The Anchorage St Ives. I might say there next time Im in the area. I enquired further afield in Penzance, Newlyn, Hayle, Camborne, Helston, Lizard, Falmouth, Newquay and a dozen other locations finally finding accommodation in Plymouth, Devon. I had made around 30 or 40 phone calls in more than an hour. We arrived at the Phantele Guest House Plymouth, Devon just before ten pm. There were sanitiser points in the entrance hall and on every landing, there were notices about social distancing on every level and communal areas. Nothing like this at The Engine Inn. All surfaces at the Phantele Guest House were squeaky clean. Our room smelt clean, the sheets were clean and without creases and not marked in any way the mattresses were in pristine condition. There were clean towels in the en-suite bathroom along with complimentary soap, all the lights worked the TV worked in the separate lounge are as did all the kitchen equipment kettle fridge and microwave etc. I would have to say that the Phantele Guest House was an exemplar of a good B&B. Looking back on my experience with The Engine Inn Im wondering why there were no spare sheets or bedding! I got the feeling that the room we were shown to at The Engine Inn had not been checked in any way. Ive managed a B&B in my time and I would never have allowed this room to be let out under any circumstances. I certainly would avoid confrontation with guests as far as possible its just poor management. As I stated earlier this was my first trip out of my house in four months due to shielding, such a negative experience. The room I booked was a great disappointment The host was unprofessional The room was dirty and unsanitary I was forced to change my plans at short notice I incurred additional expense This incident destroyed my much needed short break, I only got to experience 30% of what I had planned. The whole experience left me stressed for two days. I sort of enjoyed the following two days but they were tarnished by my poor experience at The Engine Inn. I dont usually slate anything that I review this is an exception.

    Stay

My partner and I stayed here for the night, it was okay. Room was spacious, and the heating for the room was quite nice, bathroom was also a wet room which was certainly interesting, Did have a slight odd smell to it. The room was suitable for disabled access and so there was a chair in the wet room attached to the wall, it had been knocked while my partner showered and we couldnt quite figure out how to put it back in place which was slightly awkward but it wasnt too much of an issue. Pillows werent very supportive but the bed itself was clean and quite comfortable. Owners seemed nice. It wasnt too shabby for a nights stay. Be prepared as there is no service in this area, it wasnt awful as it got my partner and I off screens and interacting which is nice, but didnt know what was going on in the world till we left.
