good position with exceptional reception staff

This hotel is difficult to rate because although a hotel, it's a bit like staying with friends. It is certainly the best hotel in the area but it is a little dated, a little worn and a little old fashioned. It is, however, very welcoming and the reception staff are truly exceptional - nothing is too much trouble and it is all done with a smile and good naturedly. We stayed here for four nights in a Connoisseur Suite - a really large room with a separate seating and office area as well as the usual sleeping area, toilet and bathroom. The furniture wasn't awfully comfortable, but there was plenty of room to spread. The food here varied in quality. Breakfast was a buffet - not huge but a reasonable choice. The rolls were good. The evening meal differed according to the day of the week. Saturday night was a five course candle-lit dinner with musical accompaniment - the food was very, very good although there were only three main courses to choose from. The music was not so hot. Friday night was a buffet - not as good as the Saturday night but really not bad. Sunday night was another five course dinner although the cheese board didn't appear. The rest of the week appeared to be a menu for starter and main course with a buffet for salads and desserts.Generally all good, particularly the main courses, but not the same standard across the board with tinned vegetable salad noted amongst the starters. The staff were friendly - most spoke some English which helped us enormously and they very kindly provided us with a translation of the menu. Now to the nit picking. There is no air conditioning in the rooms and ours did get a little hot on occasions. There were no tea/coffee making facilities provided in the room although the staff did provide us the equivalent of a kettle on request. The towels are a bit on the thin side but are changed daily. The magnificent shower cubicle that can shoot water at you from almost any direction is claustrophobic and hot and is not non slip. Yet, somehow, none of this matters too much because you feel comfortable and at ease and the position is superb for investigating the area. The Salamander railway is only across the road as is the ordinary rail station. Car parking wasn't a problem in May with a large underground garage. The ski lift in Losenheim is about a ten minute drive away. The town centre is within easy walking distance with a good array of cafes and restaurants and two supermarkets.

    Great Location and Service but...

Maybe it's because I'm an American and used to some creature comforts like air conditioning (especially when it's in the 80's) that I was a bit disappointed in the accommodations. This hotel is lovely but it does not have air conditioning and I'm a hot-natured person. The only way to cool the room is to open the windows and door to the deck. Other than that, there is no air circulating in the room and because guests are allowed to smoke on their balconies, the smell infiltrates the guest rooms. I'm a non-smoker and it really bothered me. Because we had to open the windows it allowed several insects in at night which decided to dine on me. We also had one bee and two wasps that joined us (but not for long!). The staff in both the reception area and restaurant were very helpful and kind and spoke English well enough to communicate with us. I wasn't quite ready for the co-ed spa experience where both men and women walk around nude. It's just one of those European differences that took me a bit by surprise. If you stay here on the weekend be prepared for the hotel to become overrun with other guests partaking in the spa experience. We were there during several weekdays and on the weekend and we much preferred the quiet of the weekdays. Despite trying to book a facial three-days in advance they had no one who could do it. I did, however, receive a very nice hot rock massage from Engrid. The little town and area around the hotel is picturesque and is pleasant to see on foot, and there is a little cafe across the street from the market close-by that serves the best Goulash soup. No one there spoke English but we were able to communicate. Also, the Salamander Train just down the street, which goes to the top of Mt. Schneeberg, is worth the ride.

    Excellent! Great service, excellent rooms

Stayed here for a week on a hunting and sightseeing trip. They made a special effort to have a breakfast ready everyday at 5:30 . Lunch and dinners were superb as was the service. One of the waiters reminds me of Luminaire from Beauty and the Beast. Very quaint village with lost of shopping places to hike. From what the locals tell me this is a weekend getaway place for folks in Vienna and other cities. Very friendly and neat place.

Skiing weekend 1 1/4 hours drive from Vienna

Very friendly family hotel with great sports facilities and Spa. Nice food. Great view of Schneeberg. Super friendly staff and late check-out. All above compensates for the drive to Stuhleck resort. Small ski station locally with 3 lifts. May return in summer ...

    Lovely view

The hotel is across the road from the Salamander Railway so a great location when you want to take the train to the top of the Schneeberg and hike from there. The room was large, very comfortable and had a walk in shower with rain shower head and lots of hot water. We also had a large balcony with table and chairs. The food was excellent and we enjoyed the afternoon cakes. They also have a good selection of wines at reasonable price. The staff are very friendly and helpful and will give you information about the area. There is also a large garage which was ideal when it was very hot.
