In need of refurbishment but lovely, lovely staff!

Arrived to a warm welcome by the lovely lady on reception, Covid taken very seriously all staff wearing PPE and lots of hand sanitiser dotted around the hotel. Was a party of 4 we were given rooms 15 & 16 on first floor overlooking street, first impressions were room was clean but cold as windows had been left open (which was fine as at least it had been aired out) Windows are very old and in need of replacing and had moss/mould growing on outside. Room had smell of new carpets (which was nice) however when you opened the wardrobe it smelt of damp so much so we just left our close in suit-bag, no drawers at all in room, Bathroom was clean but tired and needs replacing. Kettle/Tea/Coffee/Shortbread etc on side table and refreshed daily. Radiator not working but secondary convector heater on wall quickly heated up room, however had no hot water, told reception and the lady that had booked us in said in windy weather the fan to the boiler sometimes blows out so would go and check and get it working again. Booked Dinner in the Lounge for later and went out to explore Thetford had coffee and sandwich in Cafe opposite (sorry cant remember name) which was really good and very cheap! Came back had drinks in the bar went to freshen up ready for dinner to find hot water was still tepid. Got ready and went down for dinner to find that we had been put in the bar as they had given our table in the lounge to another guest. Dinner was ok apart from my starter (prawn/avocado cocktail) avocado was black so didn't eat it said it would be taken off bill but wasn't. Hot water never happened so they moved us from 15 to room 6 which was a nicer room and had hot water but we now had no heating (a fan heater was delivered after we called reception) Bathroom was similar to room 15, toilet roll was left on shelf when I placed it on the holder the holder fell off the wall bringing with it 4 tiles. (probably wyy it was left on shelf) Best bit of all was the breakfast cooked fresh (waitress service) no self service due to Covid. lots to choose from and all lovely, coffee and tea was good and hot and could have refills if wanted, our lovely waitress was Lucy and she was absolutely brilliant a real asset to Green King! Have to say ALL the staff were really lovely and couldn't do enough for us Green King needs to upgrade this hotel and really look after their wonderful loyal staff before they all move on..

    Overnight stay

The staff at this hotel are great ,friendly and helpful . The problem is the hotel. It is still in the dark ages, the room we had, 22 was clean but shabby ,very shabby. Green King need to spend alot of money to bring this hotel up to scratch. They are charging top rates for poor quality.

Exceptionally rude manager, bar staff fantastic

Decided in light of recent events to attempt to offer some business for the bell hotel as it has been my favourite establishments for many years. Until late Arrived at the hotel at the exact time of my booking Track and trace Mask Polite to all staff Once seated I specifically asked the staff members what I could order to eat to stick within government regulations and enjoy a few well earned Peronis.. I was instructed by staff that a scotch egg (very large with salad and dips) would be sufficient in order for me to sit and enjoy my drinks. The food arrived very well presented. Piping hot and with a smile from the server I continued to ask members of staff on the rules on regulations to ensure I didnt put them into a situation in which they felt uncomfortable but felt could not speak up. I ordered a total of three beers to accompany my meal throughout my stay, but unfortunately the Scotch egg was not to my liking (personal preference not the cooking) I asked AGAIN if I could finish my beers without the meal being finished and was reassured by staff that this was ok. Approximately 45 minutes into my visit the manager approached me to say I needed to either eat my snack or order something else as this was not a substantial meal and if the police were to come in she would be liable. Now she did not ask this in the polite professional manner you would expect from a manager but very rudely and abruptly. I asked her what I should order as a substantial meal and she said she did not know, but she knew mine was not?... (rudely) After some back and forth she asked me to leave and walked away without letting me respond. I asked the very helpful happy bar staff for a refund on my unfinished meal, only due to rude management. To be greeted by a sarcastic yet again rude manager. After processing the refund I stated manners cost nothing to which she responded what ever as every mature professional would. To top this visit off. She behaved like this in fornt of staff members and customers, of which have told me on my many visits that the manager is continuously rude and unprofessional. The cherry on the cake would have to be two staff members from separate house holds stood at the bar off duty ordering chips and alcohol despite all regulations I.E no mixing from different households inside. No ordering from the bar, table service only. Without even a raised eyebrow from management apparently so stringent on the rules. Youve lost yet another loyal regular.

Going the extra mile under very difficult circumstances.

I booked for ten nights from Dec23rd to Jan 2nd. They rang me twice beforehand. Once to ask if I was still coming. Then to ask if I wanted a Xmas lunch. I was greeted with courtesy and warmth. The general manager was much in evidence nearly all the time I was there and had upgraded my room to something quite huge complete with a (drape free) four poster. Food was excellent including a ham sandwich I had on Xmas day to accompany my, much anticipated pint of IPA. This sandwich could easily have fed two VERY hungry people. I had to leave most of the bread and a few chips. This is a nice old building with excellent friendly staff and wonderful food. On my first evening I had an delicious French onion soup followed by one of the best steaks I can remember topped with three king prawns. I pigged out with a superb cheesecake. All washed down with two large glasses of wine. All for just under £34. I had my Xmas meal on Xmas eve and was delighted with a three course set menu for £21.99 Plus the VERY important wine. Being told on Xmas Eve that the hotel was having to close on Boxing Day was very disappointing. But the receptionist on duty contacted my taxi firm and came to tell me that the pick-up had been rearranged. This was the first home holiday since I was a child.(I'm 77) All I can hope is that it is not the last. Even free entertainment on Xmas day watching a poor young woman getting her legless partner on his way added to the whole experience for me. As there were so few guests breakfast on my last morning was room service. As this was my THIRD attempt at a Xmas break, Canaries and Jersey both getting cancelled I was REALLY pleased with my curtailed stay.
