Decent place in a very pretty part of town

If you want to stay in hotels I believe there are several good options in Veliky Novgorod, but in the hostel/guesthouse range I think the Yaroslav is the only option, and it's a good one. The hostel is located near a very old and pretty part of town called Yaroslav's Court, with a whole field full of churches and buildings from the 13th to 18th centuries. It's not in the large new part of town with the railroad station and main shopping streets, but is reached by crossing a long footbridge over the Volkhov River from the Kremlin (walled fortress). There are no direct buses from the rail/bus stations, so you could walk (30 mins), take two buses, or take a bus to the central square area and then walk through the Kremlin and over the footbridge. There is a good traditional restaurant called Dom Berga just five minutes walk from the hostel, but other than this almost all of the sights you'll want are located on the other side of the river. The hostel is up the stairs in an old building, and while it's in decent shape the rooms and facilities are old, so don't expect a brand-new modern place. I booked a private double room which had a good bed, a desk and chair, plus an upholstered chair, and some shelves for your clothes. There are only shared facilities, with one large room holding two showers and three toilets. I think if the hostel part (dormitory rooms) was very busy, there would be a crush to use the facilities, but it was quiet when I was there and there was never a queue, and the space was clean. All the other guests during my two nights there were Russian, and only one of the three attendants I encountered spoke English. I speak a bit of Russian so I had no problems, but if you don't know any then you might have some communication issues. I booked in advance on Booking.com and everything was in order when I arrived. There is free WiFi in the hostel and it worked well. There's a communal kitchen and fridge where you can store items and cook, there's free tea and coffee, and a comfy sofa and TV always on to Russian stations. At the price I was happy with the Yaroslav, and I loved Veliky Novgorod as a stopover on the way from St. Petersburg to Moscow. There is one daily overnight train to Moscow if you're heading that way, and a fast train from St. Petersburg to Novgorod which takes about 2:45 hours.

    Terrible place

After arriving punctually I was met with rudeness and disorganization. I was told to wait two hours for my room despite the fact there was no one in it. The owner was the worst. She was the least pleasant person I had met on my visit to Russia. Bad behaviour and rudeness in the flesh. When it comes to food. If you have a choice to eat here or not to eat at all, choose the second one.

    Disapointing

The Hostel seems ok on photos but it's less than decent in reality. Firstly one of the showers have a crack and because of that water spills all over the bathroom. The owner lady know English at a very basic level (like 2/3 words in a sentence). Moreover I had to wait till 14:00 although my room was prepared sooner. Breakfast was unsatisfying. On the first day there was cold fried potatoes, peeled beetroot, egg and a dry cake. Wi-Fi access and small kitchen compensates all this a little.
