Old and LoudFor a cheap stay, Hotel Gearin is OK, but be prepared for old decor and if you're there on the weekend then also brace yourself for noise levels from the band rooms to wind up keeping you awake. It's a wonderful location, though, so if you're looking for a cheap stay and can sleep through noise, it will do the trick!

Worst night ever!Really, really loud music that vibrated through the building till 3am. Apologetic note and earplugs on the room table were the first we knew about the loud music. Unless you are a roadie or a groupie for this band and don't want to sleep, don't go there. I felt sorry for anyone living anywhere near this place. Bathrooms need a major upgrade. Food (pizza) cold.

Old pub that's sadly isolated from Katoomba town centre. The Hotel Gearin was established in 181 and is notable for it's "long bar" which is very long. It sits in an isolated position on the opposite side of the railway tracks from Katoomba town centre and possibly doesn't get the patronage the old pub deserves. The beers and service was good and it seemed to attract an "artistic" crowd.

A unique stayUpon first glance, this hotel appears to be a dilapidated reminder of a by-gone era. But when you walk inside you feel a sense of grandeur. With decadent timber detailing, bold geometric carpets and tall ceilings with stained glass domes, it is a truly a marvellous building. We stayed in a simple en-suite room. It was clean, warm and extremely reasonably priced. A man called Keith acquired the lease recently and hopes to restore the hotel and the pub (now a coffee shop) below to its former glory. We cant wait to see whats in store. It was an interesting and unique experience and would highly recommend for a quick overnight trip from Sydney.

Delighted old pub, shame about the doof doofWe booked this pub to stay for Blues Mountains Ukulele Festival through Booking. com. The price for a room for 3 adults was $100 for Saturday night, when other venues were far more expensive. We don't mind older venues and we knew there were bands on weekend nights. The Hotel Gear in is delightfully unspoiled and retains features of its original Art Deco architecture. Our room was spacious. The bed was firm and comfortable to me and the pillows and linen were of high quality. Unfortunately there was no access to warmer covers, and even in summer, these can be required. My partner and I were ok but our friend said she nearly froze. The other issue was the sound leakage from the music venue below the guest rooms. Our misfortune was to be above a "doof", which was unnecessary loud and went until 3am. In fairness, the hotel provide earplugs to resident guests but they were unhelpful against the vibration that threatened to remove us from our beds. I thought requesting 10am checkout after that was a bit cheeky. Would I stay again? Yes, because I think classic venues should be supported. On the other hand, venues should make all efforts to ensure the comfort of their guests.
