Friendly and well set upI would have liked to give a very good review to this motel, which tries hard. Receptionist really friendly, and the room with small kitchen was well set up for a budget stay. As others have said, some things are old and tired, but for the price, youre going to expect that. Unfortunately the nearby highway meant a good sleep was impossible for me: I woke at 5am each day with the noise, and the passing trucks made the building and bed shake. If youre a heavy sleeper, or maybe in a room on the non-highway side of the building, you might not have any problems, as other reviewers have said it was fine for them. Otherwise, all was good.

Great for one nightOur family of 4 stayed for one night in a two-bedroom, two-story room. It was comfortable and clean - basic but what we needed and paid for. Good cooking facilities and very quiet. Our top floor doors opened out onto a walkway for all units, but this was not an issue.

Well located, comfortable accomodationI travel to Rotorua each year to go mountain biking. While only a five minute drive into town, the Pohutu lodge is the closest hotel to the mountain biking hub. Its only an easy 5-10 minute ride to the trails. Accommodation is not modern, but comfortable, and the staff are all helpful, friendly and attentive. The owner Mark, has always been great to deal with and has gone out of his way to attend to our needs in regard to our bike storage and cleaning. The Pohutu geyser is literally next door, and there is 24hr BP right across the road. Im already looking forward to my next stay at the Pohutu!

Keep Away Security RiskThe heating is very very poor no heat pump little tiny heaters that give out little heat. In summer it will roasting as no Air Con is present. Furniture is outdated and in need of replacement damaged by water. Key to your room also fits other rooms I mistakenly entered another room using my key which frightened me to think how easy it was for someone to do it to my room. Bathroom is downstairs in the COLD so when you get out of the shower you have to go all the way upstairs to where some attempt of heat is. Can;t close bedroom door as bed is in the way they obviously have no idea how to run the place out to make a profit and provide very little. Noise of traffic is heard all the time from nearby Highway. I would not recommend staying here until they spend some money of renovations.

Horrible don't book!!What shock when we got there found out the the lodge was a housing place for MSD ( ministry of social development) families and that out of the 11 units 7 were taken by MSD. So there are kids running wild from 1 end if the complex to the other outside your room as the balconies run the length of the complex. We had a 2 bedroom unit right in the middle of these families and could hear the next door people walking around as the upstairs floors creaked and the walls were not sound proof. These units need some TLC as doors are squeaky, coming off the hinges. Units could be updated but I suppose if they are getting used to house MSD families you would bother. Then to top off our stay we had no hot water for 24hrs as the hot water cylinder broke down ( with no compensation offered). The unit was clean.
